Frequently Asked Questions — Studying in United Kingdom

Why should I study in the UK?

The UK is home to four of the world's top ten universities, and its one-year masters degrees save you both a year of tuition and a year of living costs compared with most other countries. The Graduate Route gives you guaranteed post-study work time.

How much does it cost to study in the UK?

International tuition is typically £14,000–30,000 per year (more for medicine and MBA programs). Living costs are about £12,000–15,000 per year outside London, and materially higher in London. Budget also for the Immigration Health Surcharge paid with your visa.

What are the requirements for a UK Student visa?

You need a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from a licensed university, an approved English test (IELTS 6.0–7.0 typical), and proof of funds held for 28 consecutive days. Undergraduate applications go through UCAS; postgraduate applications go direct.

Can I study in the UK without IELTS?

Yes, in many cases — universities can assess English through your previous English-medium education (a Medium of Instruction letter), and accept alternatives like PTE Academic and TOEFL. Some programs use the university's own assessment, which then satisfies the visa requirement too.

Can I bring my spouse or children to the UK?

Since 2024, most taught masters students cannot bring dependents — that route is now limited mainly to PhD/research students and government-sponsored scholars. If moving with family is a priority, a research program or a different destination may suit you better; we can map the options.

What scholarships can I get in the UK?

Chevening (fully funded masters), Commonwealth Scholarships and GREAT Scholarships (£10,000) lead the field, and most universities add their own international awards of £3,000–10,000. Deadlines fall early — Chevening closes roughly a year before your course starts.

Can I work while studying in the UK?

Student visa holders on degree-level courses can work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during vacations. Many universities also offer paid placement years as part of the degree.

Can I stay in the UK after graduating?

The Graduate Route currently allows two years of open work rights (three for PhDs) — though the government has confirmed it will shorten to 18 months for most students applying after January 2027, so application timing matters. From there most graduates switch to a Skilled Worker visa with an employer sponsor.
